End of the Year Surveys

Hello my delightful ELers! I have TWO surveys I’d like you to complete today.

  1. Please click here to take a survey about your year in EL. You even get to grade Ms. Schmidt and give her advice on how to be a rockstar teacher! How cool is that?
  2. If you are a 2nd-5th grader, please click here to take a survey about your hopes for next year. The information on this survey will be shared with your new teachers so they can make your transition to a new center as exciting and comfortable as possible.

Inspired by the day…

I am astounded by the energy of my students and their passionate drive to learn, create, and follow their interests. Every day my kiddos walk into this room they bring with them a breath of fresh air. They have positive spirits, a jump in their step, and a desire to just be who they are in all their radiating glory. I welcome them as they are, for who they are.

Last night I participated in a professional development course offered by my district based on Rick Smith’s book Conscious Classroom Management. So far I am finding this book to be fantastic. It contains solid principles that have ALREADY proven beneficial to me in my classroom. The book is based on the idea that teachers should assume the best about their students. Oh, how I agree!

“When we start to assume the best about our students and ourselves, teaching changes and results happen.” ~Rick Smith

I believe that my students want to be here. I believe that my students want to learn. I believe that my students want to rise to the high expectations that I set. I believe that they want to be respectful, responsible, caring, honest, helpful, inspiring citizens. I ASSUME THE BEST. The key, I think, is helping students bridge the gap from where they are to where they want to be. This is one of the most important roles of a teacher.

During the first couple weeks of school I have had my students think considerably about what inspires them and their goals in both life and the classroom. As a teacher, I try to lead by example. I have attempted to make my classroom an inspiring oasis and have tried to set goals right along with my students. Just in case they have missed it, or to simply drive home the point….I want to draw attention to the following poster that hangs in my room. I think it pretty much sums everything up:

Stock Market 101

WOW! Stock market frenzy is in the air at the EL Center this week! Several small groups of students are beginning to study the stock market and prepare for the Stock Market Game simulation starting next week! It’s going to be a mind-bending, brain-stretching, real world experience for these students as they learn the ins and outs of the stock market and the diverse range of skills necessary to maintain a watchful eye on their investments.

Students, if you have have any questions, please post them here! Let me know if you are having trouble researching a company, differentiating between a brand or parent company, or struggling to find a public company’s stock ticker symbol. I’ll help you look if you get stuck. Next week on 9/13/10 the stock market game begins! Are you ready? If you think of anything else you’d like to know before next week, ask it here.

First Days

I had a wonderful first week as a new gifted teacher! My students are simply fabulous, and I enjoy each and every minute I spend with them! At the end of every day I leave for home completely exhausted, but grinning from ear-to-ear. This is my calling. This is where I am supposed to be.
